What is a Jackknife Accident?

Big rigs have two major components: the truck and the trailer. Jackknife accidents occur when the truck, or cab, slows down or stops while the trailer continues its forward momentum. The trailer pushes out to one side, no longer following directly in line with the truck.

As the trailer skids, it looks as if the big rig is folding in half at a 90-degree angle, making an “L” or “V” shape rather than an “I.”

This can cause the tractor-trailer to become off-balance and nearly impossible for the driver to control.

Why Do Commercial Trucks Jackknife?

First, it’s important to understand why large trucks don’t usually jackknife. In order for a truck to drive safely, there needs to be a constant source of traction between all of the tires and the ground. As the truck moves on dry ground at a constant speed, static friction builds up and keeps the tires connected with the road.

The more static friction there is, the more traction the vehicle has.

Trucks jackknife when there’s a sudden disruption in the vehicle’s static friction and traction. As the rear tires lose traction, they become more susceptible to moving to the side rather than forward.

So, it makes sense that some of the most common causes of jackknife crashes include:

  • Sudden braking
  • Slamming on the brakes
  • Wet or slick road surfaces
  • Speeding or traveling too fast for road conditions
  • Making unsafe or high-speed turns
  • Empty cargo loads

All of these things can cause the trailer and cab to come out of balance and lead to a jackknife accident.

Who Can Be Liable For a Jackknife Accident in Jacksonville?

Anyone who contributes to a car accident with a jackknifing truck in Jacksonville can be liable for your damages.

This might include:

  • Negligent truck drivers
  • Negligent third-party motorists
