You must be at least 16 years old to legally ride a motorcycle in the state of Florida. If you already have a driver’s license, you can add a motorcycle endorsement by meeting certain requirements. Even if you do not hold a standard driver’s license, you can obtain a motorcycle-only license.
Keep reading below to learn everything you need to know about getting a motorcycle license in Florida.
How Do You Get a Motorcycle Endorsement in Florida?
If you already have a standard Florida Class E driver’s license, obtaining a motorcycle endorsement is a relatively straightforward process.
To qualify, you must:
- Complete the Florida Basic RiderCourse through an authorized provider.
- Apply for your motorcycle endorsement within one year of completing the course.
- Visit a local driver license or tax collector office to have the endorsement added to your license and pay the required fee.
Once your endorsement is issued, you may legally operate a motorcycle in Florida.
Can You Get a Motorcycle-Only License?
If you do not already have a Florida driver’s license, you may apply for a motorcycle-only license. In addition to completing the Basic RiderCourse, you must pass the knowledge exam required for a standard driver’s license before visiting a driver’s license office to obtain your license.
Applicants under 18 must also hold a learner’s license for at least one year without any traffic violations before qualifying for a motorcycle-only license.
Do I Have to Wear a Motorcycle Helmet in Florida?
All riders under 21 must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle in Florida. Riders 21 and older may choose not to wear a helmet, but they must meet some additional requirements. If they opt not to wear a helmet, they must carry at least $10,000 in medical insurance in case of a motorcycle accident.
All riders, regardless of age, must wear eye protection when riding a motorcycle. Riders under 21 who are caught riding without a helmet may be convicted of a non-criminal traffic violation. Fines for this violation are fairly minimal. A first offense carries a fine of $35 plus court costs.
Understanding How to Handle a Motorcycle Accident
Even though you can ride a motorcycle as young as age 16, inexperienced riders are much more likely to be involved in an accident. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, you may be entitled to recover compensation if someone else caused the crash. Knowing what to do can help protect your legal rights.
After an accident, you should:
- Call 911 to report the crash, especially if anyone is injured
- Get medical treatment right away for any injuries
- If possible, take photos of the crash scene and all the vehicles involved
- Get names and phone numbers for any witnesses who saw the crash
- Document your injuries through medical records, daily journals, and photos
- Save all bills, receipts, and other accident-related expense documentation
- Do not talk to the insurance company until you have talked to a lawyer
- Get help from an experienced personal injury lawyer who can assist with your claim
Motorcycle accidents often result in catastrophic injuries because motorcycles lack many of the safety features found in passenger vehicles, such as airbags, seat belts, and enclosed frames.
